‘ Burkha’ was originally an outfit worn by women in Arabia.
The whole argument of Burka is a choice, mostly gained momentum in reaction to attacks on Islam and using Muslim women as a tool for the attack on Islam, this has ultimately lead numerous women to defend their faith in face of bigoted attacks. As Muslims became the new definition of the oppressed class for numerous social groups like SJW, human rights groups, and feminists, their tradition and traditional outfits gained more symbolic value than they originally had. That’s where the whole argument of Burka is a choice came from.
Defending Burka became equivalent if defending Muslims in general, which is simply not correct, Muslim men should not be given a free pass on the fate of their women and should be allowed to oppress their women, because they are oppressed, Burka is not even central to Islam. Therefore its defense as a defense for Muslims, in general, is misplaced.
It’s silly that the rights group fell for this trap and started defending something which is against the fundamentals they once stood for.
It’s important to see this in the right context, as what is being touted as the “choice” of Muslim women in the West, is certainly not in certain parts of the world, it’s not a choice in Taliban dominated Afghanistan, several Arab countries, parts of South Asia and many other regions. So if you take a global view to these issues in most of the cases is it is either enforced by the law or women are shamed into wearing burkha as a measure of social control, therefore the choice argument does not hold water.
It’s a choice only in the case of western democracies where govt and society do not intrude into women’s wardrobe.
It is also to point out that a woman who is wearing a burka can not be equated to a bikini-clad woman as ‘both are forced by society to dress in a certain manner as the woman in a bikini can choose to dress conservatively and will not be forced into submission or ostracised by society for her choices, while the woman in Burka might even lose her life if she chooses to shun it, she is not bringing shame to her family and community, not angering God, basically, her choices only affect herself, therefore while they can be body-shamed and slut-shamed in general the scope of it is still limited to the individual.
Burkha in itself might not be as oppressive, but what it represents in 90 in the context of Muslim-dominated regions is certainly oppressive. I am yet to find a Burka clad surgeon, lawyer, scientists, or any other high achieving women, in almost all cases little girls indoctrinated to always wear Burka in front of others are not allowed to dream beyond their household, all major and minor choices are for others to make and they don’t achieve their full potential. however, there are plenty of examples of Muslim women who simply dress modestly and cover their heads are in every major profession, therefore Muslim women can observe Islam and yet achieve everything.
Also, while I have found many arguments in favor of how it’s a choice, there is not a single doctor, psychologist, or sociologist worth, their salt who can defend Burka as being good for women’s health and psychology.
Despite all the above arguments, I think that’s right to ban Burka, as in most cases it’s inspired by islamophobia and not a concern for Muslim women.
Burkha needs to be banned. Many Islamic Countries already banned Burkha then why not INDIA.
Those who were against this decision were basically those who comprising with the National Security.
I'm not against any Religion & instead of Burkha, Hijab is a good option because Burkha hides the face (which is more important for verification & Security checkings) & anyone can do hideous activities & crimes behind Burkha and blame goes only to Muslims & Muslims has to suffer for that.
Burkha must need to be banned but so-called peaceful and liberals started to crying that the Minority is in danger. Government abusing Minorities Religion Sentiments.
The above scenario creates a lot of fuss for banning the Burkha in India.
I hope people including Muslims, understand what I am trying to convey the message. Hope you also become part of banning Burkha. I'm Okay with the Hijab concept.
